Activating Sedna ~ Planetary Protectress

by Kim Gould on November 11, 2009

Sedna moves slow.  She’s been in the Gate of Splitting Apart (23), in the Throat Chakra, since June 2004 and will stay there until June 2014.   Considering she wasn’t discovered until November 2003, most of our conscious experience of Sedna has come to us through the filter of this gate.

11th November 2009

About this time each year the Sun goes into the adjoining Gate, making a channel with Sedna that connects the Throat Centre with the Ajna Centre.  Mind to Throat.

This year we have an added bonus.  Jupiter and Mars make a further channel that brings the G Centre into the picture.  Mind to Heart.

It means that not only can we express what’s in our hearts, we can also interact consciously from our minds with that process.

Plus if we add in the beautiful energy of Haumea in Gate 57 we also get the Spleen Centre (intuition) included.  And Saturn and Pluto (in a square to each other just now) get activated too.

An important Asteroid, Vesta, is in Gate 29 to bring the Sacral Centre into the picture.  Everyone is showing up for this party.  As you read on, remember that Vesta is about maintaining our own sovereignty and in the Sacral that means taking control of our own vitality, creativity and sexual energy.

The activation to Sedna carries two messages.

Firstly, Sedna is generally seen as a protector of the environment.  Astrologer Barbara Schermer describes it like this:  We have become a danger to our own natural world and must act swiftly to insure salvation of all living beings.  (You can download a pdf of her article on Sedna here ~ http://www.astrologyalive.com/TMA409Sedna.pdf)

Sedna, as the Inuit people’s Goddess of the Sea, is particularly interested in things oceanic.  Including global warming, sea temperatures, ozone levels, melting ice and glaciers, rising sea levels, fish stocks and the general health and wellbeing of sea based cultures.

In December, nations from around the globe will attend UN sponsored climate discussions to try to get some agreement on carbon emissions.  Leading up to this event,  fossil fuel lobby groups are going into a frenzied backlash against the growing grassroots movement for environmental change.  (http://www.publicintegrity.org/investigations/global_climate_change_lobby/)

Expect to see some significant issues being aired over the next few days, especially on 15th when the Earth is in an exact conjunct with Sedna.   Jupiter and Mars are taking sides and the whole thing says you don’t have to go in punching, but you do have to stand your ground.   Just now though, it’s hard to tell who’s right and who’s wrong.   All each one of us can do is follow what’s right for us personally.

And the second issue?

Do you remember the Sedna story?  To quote Barbar Schermer again:

“A beautiful, perhaps vain, daughter reaches marriagable age, but refuses all suitors until a handsome and spellbinding stranger wins her heart and hand.  Only as they journey to his distant land does he reveal that he is the spirit-being Raven Man.  He proves to be a poor husband, barely providing her sustenance and treating her as another of her shiny possessions. “

To cut a long story short, her father rescues her but out of fear of the Raven Man throws her out of the boat on the way home and when she refuses to let go he chops off her fingers and they become the whales and dolphins.

It’s not uncommon to find amongst women a feeling of being put to the use of the patriarchy by fulfilling the roles of wife and mother.

One of the names that springs to mind when we think of not fitting in with the feminine roles is Lilith and she is in the Crown Chakra in the Gate of Transition.  Read what she has to say:

Now is the time of struggle.  The transition must be completed. We must make ourselves strong in resolution; this brings good fortune.  All misgivings that might arise in such grave times of struggle must be silenced.  It is a question of a fierce battle to break and to discipline the Devil’s Country, the forces of decadence.  But the struggle also has it’s reward.  Now is the time to lay the foundations of power and mastery for the future.

That’s enough to give me shivers.  I also wanted to see what the asteroid Diana is up to. Diana is the caretaker of the wild and viginal young daughter.  Diana has been intimately involved with the so called triple conjunction ~ Neptune, Chiron and Jupiter ~ in Aquarius.  She’s in the Gate of Clinging Fire, down in the Solar Plexus Centre with Neptune, Chiron, Uranus and Makemake.  She tells us that this is a time to cling to the highest principles of art and culture to bring harmony.  It also tells us that there is still time to let go of the past and move into a better future.

Back to Sedna, was she vain?  Was she so self-concerned that she was unable to do what was best for her family and community?

I’ve been doing reading after reading lately for women who have individual circuitry in their charts and who feel bad about not really being that interested in doing the caring sharing thing.  You’re designed to be that way!! I tell them, much to their immense relief.   Is it vain and selfish to want to be number 1 in your own life?  Is it vain and selfish not to want to continually sacrifice yourself to others?

Whatever the  answer is to that question, Sedna was chucked overboard and her severed fingers became the dolphins and whales.  She evolved into the Goddess  who ensured that the Inuits were fed, clothed and housed from the depths of her ocean.  So long as they honoured her.

The underlying message in the Gate of Splitting Apart, the gate that Sedna is in now, is the rising up of yin energy to break down the rigid yang energy at the top.  In the I Ching this is generally seen as a evil influence.  However I believe that in this situation we are looking at an evolutionary journey of the feminine, via Sedna, to break down an aspect of the masculine that is no longer working. A step in the evolutionary journey for the feminine to step out from behind the father and the husband and come into her own power.

The last time Sedna was this close to earth, we had the end of the last Ice Age.  Again, Sedna may be unlocking the emotional energy of the planet by melting ice (water = emotions), and our feminine aspect is the portal for that process.

The movie Whale Rider was released in 2003, the same year that Sedna was discovered.  It tells the story of a young girl who becomes a leader against the traditional belief that only males can take that role.   The core of her leadership is her spiritual connection with the whales.  Here’s a mini version of the movie, it’s so beautiful.

And then, just to shift the viewpoint slightly, lets go back to our vain young Sedna and remember that it is women who do most of the purchasing in families.  Shopping therapy and updating the furnishings are perhaps akin to planetary suicide.  Abundance is one thing, an addiction to consumption something else entirely.   When you consume, make sure you do it with a connection to your heart and soul because then you add rather than subtract from our wealth.

Beautiful post, Kim. Sedna feels very powerful to me. As with most myths that were reshaped by Patriarchs, I’m wary of the description of Sedna as ‘vain’ as well. What if she’s the wild, beautiful Feminine that didn’t want to be mashed into the Patriarchal/Tribal pigeon-hole? Just a musing… :)

I felt called to watch Whale Rider again last night. It really is a beautiful movie and story. Pikea reminds me of Sedna; perhaps there’s a link there.

Blessings,
Jamie

Jamie, according to Barbara Schermer in the article on Sedna (that you sent me :) ) the girl who played the main role, Keisha Castle-Hughes has a strong Sedna, as does the date for the initial movie release in 2003. No details for Paikea, but a truly Sedna inspired story. And yes to your interpretation of the wild beautiful feminine who doesn’t want to be mashed. That has always been a strong archetypal story for me too, in dreams and meditations. After I wrote this post I realised that it’s the ‘mashing’ that’s up for clearing just now. Great word! love you.

My pleasure Dani. Sometimes these things write themselves and I just come along for the ride! :)

Inspired it is, and inspiring in a roundabout way, echoing in deep places.
Thank you.
