Are You Reading Only One Layer of Your Client’s Consciousness?

I met someone at a party

I was at a party recently and met a 3/1 Mental Projector. He only had one channel. Lots of openness. I talked to him about his one steady mental process constantly noticing new patterns forming, this is his way of making sense of his world.

He looked at me a bit quizzically.

That’s just how it is! Sometimes though, especially when I’m around other people, I feel completely different. More certain. I know what I want. Decisions come easily and I just act. Can you see that in my chart?”

Not this one, I said. But there’s another chart that maps what happens to your auric field when you’re engaging with the world.

I pulled up his Interactive chart.

Ah, he said, yes! This makes sense.

In your Interactive chart, I explained, you are still a Projector. But now your intuition has a direct line to your voice. Your G Centre is defined, so you have a steadier sense of who you are, and people naturally look to you for direction.

That sounds just like me, he said.

He paused.

There’s something else I can’t explain. I’m a performer and sometimes, when I stand in front of a crowd it feels so different. I’m not taking in everyone else’s energy, it’s more like I’m carrying people along on an emotional journey.

I nodded.

I think there’s another chart you’ll want to see.

I showed him his Spiritual Expression chart.

Here you’re an Emotional Manifestor. When you’re expressing this part of yourself, you still have a lot of openness, but you’re the one moving the emotional field.

He looked at me for a moment.

I feel like you’ve described something I have always experienced – how much things change for me depending on who I’m with and what I’m doing. I know about Human Design, and that one chart just never really explained those shifts.

Who Was I Talking To?

Okay, so I didn’t actually meet this person at a party. I’m showing you Freddie Mercury’s Multidimensional Matrix charts.

I have had this conversation so many times over the years though. People tell me about parts of themselves that simply aren’t visible in their standard Human Design chart, politely checking in – what about this part of me, where is that in the chart? Well, if we’re looking at just one chart, it’s not there!

That’s because the standard chart maps just one layer of consciousness. The Multidimensional Matrix reveals the others.

What Is the Multidimensional Matrix?

The Multidimensional Matrix is an extension of Human Design developed by Dr Eleanor Haspel-Portner. It maps multiple chart layers, each offering a different perspective on who we are and how we engage with life. I’ve been studying and teaching this work since 2006 because it answers questions that a single chart simply can’t.

Each layer has its own auric field dynamics, which means Type, Profile, and Awareness can shift depending on which layer is active. Some people show remarkable consistency across their chart layers – they feel the same no matter who they are with, or what they are doing (even sleeping!). Others have strikingly different ways of engaging with the world.

Why This Matters for Human Design Coaches

For coaches, this changes what you see in your client’s design. It shifts the questions you can ask, and the answers you can offer.

If Type, Profile, Awareness, and auric field dynamics can shift between layers of consciousness – like they do in Freddie Mercury’s matrix – what might you be missing by reading only the standard chart?

If a client feels deeply purposeful when they’re teaching, leading, or performing, but there’s nothing in the single chart layer you are using that explains it, where do you look?

If a different pattern of definition and openness is shaping the way your client engages with the world, how do you coach them if you can’t see it?

If an important channel appears only in their Spiritual Expression chart, how do you speak to them about the gifts they’re here to bring into the world?

Where to Go Next

The Multidimensional Matrix doesn’t replace the standard Human Design chart. It expands the conversation, revealing dimensions of your clients that may otherwise remain invisible. It’s often the moment when people stop wondering what’s wrong with them and start recognising another layer of themselves.
