Altjira in Human Design and Astrology: Reclaiming Cultural Wisdom
In your Human Design and astrology chart, Altjira reveals your relationship with myth, language and cultural inheritance.
Discover how dwarf planet Altjira deepens your Human Design and astrology readings by revealing how one dominant story can gradually replace a rich diversity of individual and human ways of being in the world, until we begin to mistake a single perspective for universal truth.
The Astrological Meaning Altjira
Altjira is a TransNeptunian Object, with an orbit of 294 years, so it spends on average about 4.5 years in each Human Design gate.
Altjira takes its name from what early European anthropologists believed to be the central god of the Australian Indigenous Dreaming. The planet is often interpreted as representing “dreaming” or “Dreamtime”—but this association is deeply problematic for two key reasons.
Firstly, there is no central god in Australian Indigenous culture. Prior to European invasion, there were over 250 distinct groups with their own language and culture. And none of them had a god. There was definitely no ‘central god’.
Secondly, the word itself was a mistaken interpretation by early anthropologists, from the Arunta word alcheringa. The very idea of an Australian Dreamtime came from a European misunderstanding of the realm in which the old people, or ancestors, lived.
The word morphed into the name Altjira, which European settlers believed to be an Aboriginal word for the dreamtime.
So we have two problems. The misunderstanding of the very notion of the dreamtime, and a word made up by Europeans to represent it. Later, as the word became popular amongst Europeans, the local Indigenous people picked it up and began to use it. To them, though, it was a European word.
The True Meaning of Altjira
This whole process speaks to a problem of all early European anthropologists – and of how we make use of this powerful planetary archetype. Guided by their own cultural assumptions, early anthropologists interpreted the traditions they encountered through the lens of European mythology. This led to to a masking of the true depth and complexity of the cultures they studied, and to continued distortion of our shared worldview.
Anthropologist, Wade Davis, coined the term ethnosphere to describe the sum total of all thoughts, beliefs, mythos, ideas and intuitions brought into being by the human imagination. Think of it as similar to ecology, but it’s about human culture. Just as species are going extinct, so human language, traditions and worldviews are disappearing at an alarming rate. When this happens we lose part of our storehouse of human tradition, human knowing, human being. We lose access to ways of being human.
It’s important, as part of our understanding of the ethnosphere, to recognise that indigenous cultures are not ‘failed’ attempts at modernity, but dynamic living systems with adaptive and sustainable traditions. Their loss through colonising and extractive economic systems, is a theft of our shared human experience.
“What we’ve done is take the brilliance of the Industrial West and impose it upon the world as the norm at the expense of all other cultures.”
The idea that the word describes something sacred to the aboriginal people avoids the fact that the use of the English word provides a way to NOT talk about the sacred.
Discovery of Altjira
Altjira was discovered in 2001, in Gate 23.5 – the Gate of Stripping Away.
It’s no good to imagine the future and make plans without bringing your energy back to the centre and honour the transformational process. You benefit from the connections between people, between the past and the present, between ideas. They help you ‘string things together’ and see the coherent significance of events.

Altjira in your Human Design
In your Design, Altjira represents your capacity to tap into the rich depth of human experience and cultural expression. It also carries a sensitivity to the power of words to reveal or hide our experience.
Altjira influences us personally and universally. In your Design and astrology chart it reveals your sensitivity to individual diversity being obscured by a single dominant world view. If you have a significant Altjira activation, you’ll likely find yourself very aware of what we could call cultural hegemony – one single perspective being mistaken for universal truth.
When Humans Become Users
Audrey Tang was the Taiwanese Minster of Digital Affairs from 2022 to 2024. They have Altjira in Gate 3, with their Personal Sun, and in Gate 42 with their Personality Mars. Tang describes the way we use the digital space as a ‘category error’ and suggests we change the way we describe things:
The internet of things becomes the internet of beings. Virtual reality becomes a shared reality. Machine Learning becomes collaborative learning. User experience becomes human experience.

Altjira represents how we use language, but even more than this, it calls us to notice what language we have access to, and how it influences our imaginative capacity to create a shared future.

I’ve got to admit it, I’m a Love Your Design addict!! I open your posts with glee as they always, always make sense of the nonsensical and give me that wee reminder that all is as it is and we’re fine!
Thank you so much. You just saved my day/week/life (well, almost!) with this post!!
Particularly this : Relationships with people and money are nonsensical just now, shifting so far from the known that we are lost without a compass.
… but parking spaces, what’s with it?! A relief to hear some sense made of it. 🙂
The parking spaces made complete sense to me as I’ve experienced the exact same recently too!!!
Jackie it was a weird experience but the good thing was how it made me realise that I now take parking spaces … and lots of other things … for granted. Even my mum, who doesn’t ‘believe’ in ‘this stuff’ says to me ‘oh well, Kim’s here so we’ll get a parking spot easily’ ..lol!
For me this is one of your best posts! I get it! …nice that the rich aboriginal culture is also being utilised. About time! Seems to me as if we really are going right back to the true essence of our existence.
I’ll write more about Altjira soon Eleni, because he’s the focal point for Pluto and Haumea at the moment. A very important energy just now! Glad you enjoyed it, a bit of Aussie flavour 🙂

This is my first time in this site and I got to it thanks to Ron Baker. I M THIRLLED AAAAAAAAAND RELIEVED that I am not paranoid. I was beginning to think that after a fortnight before turning 74, I had lost the thread of where I wanted to believe I was going to. As if the lights all turned green but actually signalled red
Parking places, as other “reminders” are definitely good fellow travellers to come across on our rather shaky new realities (if they are realities and not a mirage )
Hi Lynn and welcome! I’m so glad you enjoyed the article in Altjira. You might like to join us for the Emergent Womens Program, where we are all together being thrilled at the community of women who are definitely not crazy or paranoid :).
